So you’re new Pointscene user and don’t know where to start? This is the right place to find out what data you need and how it should be prepared beforehand. In addition, I want to present the best practices I learned that need to be considered before uploading data into Pointscene.

Fortunately, it is really easy to get yourself started. All you need at the beginning is point cloud. You can upload any point cloud obtained with a terrestrial, mobile and aerial laser scanner or derived from images. If the files are in one of the following formats: LAS, LAZ, E57, PTS or in a ZIP package, your data is ready to be uploaded. Just make sure that the size of one file doesn’t exceed 30 GB.

If you wish to visualise also vector data, all you have to do is to upload your DXF files together with point cloud. Each of these should have a maximum size of 50MB. The platform supports following entity types: points, lines, curves, faces, texts.

Additionally, I strongly recommend to include projection information with your data (e.g. EPSG code). If point cloud has known map projection, data can be mapped on top of a base map. You’ll be able to examine the extent of the data. If you’re not sure how to assign the coordinate system to your point cloud, I suggest using LAStools software. It can also be used for classification and other operations.

What is more, Pointscene enables you to add 360 photos to your point cloud. Images should be in JPG format with 2:1 aspect ratio. Before uploading them, check if all photographs have orientation and georeferencing data in CSV/KML file. Include also header row in your CSV file. Below you’ll find recommended CSV file structure to enclose with your photos.

Hopefully, after reading this text, you know exactly what you need to start using Pointscene. Don’t forget to check out next article with step- by- step instructions on how to upload data. It’s coming soon.
