“yo tengo una palabra perfecta con siete letras.” i set letras on board with “Q” on double word score.

Q U E N A D A

abuelita claps and gives me a hug.

my grandma is the coolest. and she has all her own teeth. i hope tio Smillew’s grandma will visit and bake chocolate cake.

“sweetie, you can’t use a foreign language,” angie tells me.

we all stare at her.

“besides ‘que nada’ is two words.”

tia carrie ann translates for abuelita.

abuelita dice, “ella tiene razón, cariño. son dos palabras.”

“es okay.” i take away the n, a, d, a and move the q, u, e to the middle of the row.

“it’s still a foreign word —”

“ — who says we gotta speak english?!” mrs. jackson been quiet, but she cuts out angie. “how many english men and mad dogs livin roun here? how many?”

“wasn’t that the name of a band?” mama asks in her quiet voice.
