We are mammals.

We have mammary glands.

Our mammary glands transform molecules of fats and proteins and sugars, bundle them with other good stuff like antibodies and vitamins, and produce the perfect food for a developing baby.

We are human mothers.

We have jobs and busy lives and (all too often) crappy maternity policies.

Our pediatricians advise us to provide our babies with the perfect food of breast milk for at least six months (they strongly suggest continuing this out to twelve and WHO recommends two years!), but often we go back to work after less than three months.

Enter the breast pump.

Let’s be honest here. Many mothers LOVE nursing their babies. No mother truly enjoys pumping. We do it for our babies. We do it because we have the ability to supply them with the perfect food even if we must part from them for the day.

Far too often pumping occurs under the cover of darkness. We are shoved into closets, pushed into dirty bathrooms, and met with quizzical looks when we make requests for “a place to pump.”

The Pumping Chronicles is here to shed some light. Let’s tell our horror stories, our funny stories, our stories of triumph and pumping bravado. Let’s support each other and lead the way for making change in our world.

We are moms, we are humans, we are mammals.
