An English Sonnet

You see me, Love, and know my secret core,
The deepest, darkest corners of my soul,
And if I know myself, You know me more;
The night is bright as day: You see the whole.
O, where can I avoid Your Presence, God?
In heaven and in hell, I find You there.
Your wings will lift me up, Your hand will guard
Me when I sleep, and when I wake You’re there.
You made me pure and matchless, as I am,
But those who hate me take Your Name in vain
And say that who I am is to be damned;
They hem me in with fetters, walls, and chains.
Search me, God; You know my heart and soul.
Heal me, Love, and help me to be whole.

Esther learned to read when she was four years old, and began writing shortly thereafter. She is a Canadian queer Christian poet, crafting with words to create art and music.
