A Weekend of New Crying Memes

The highs and lows of a big sports weekend in Europe

Let us first start off by saying that we are not mocking crying. We cry all the time (we just cried about this yesterday), and we know firsthand how emotional sports can get. We just think that Crying Jordan could use a bit of company. Sure, he now has Crying LeBron and Sad Bill Murray — but this weekend, he got a few more friends.

1) We’ll start with Crying Ronaldo. Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo took a bad hit to the knee early in the Euro 2016 final Sunday. Heartbreaking to watch him leave one of the biggest matches of his life in agony (while a moth flew in his eye). And to be honest, it was a little hard to tell at first if they were real tears or dramatic, fake tears that are so prevalent in soccer. But when Ronaldo couldn’t return to the match, we were convinced. He was hurt. And he was seriously bummed. But his teammate Éder went on to score in the 109th minute, giving Portugal a 1–0 win against host France, as the whole country watched and wept. (Perhaps it was bad karma for ripping off beloved underdog Iceland’s signature clap?) In any case, to restore your faith in crying (and in humanity), check out this clip of a crying French fan being consoled by a sweet young Portugal fan.

2) Next we move on to Crying Murray and Crying Lendl at Wimbledon. Andy Murray represented a bright spot in British sport, in the aftermath of Brexit and England’s brexit from Euro 2016. Murray and his coach, the typically stoic Ivan Lendl, both broke down after Murray won the Wimbledon final in three sets against Canadian Milos Raonic [6–4, 7–6(3), 7–6(2)]. Things took a turn when Murray thanked British PM David Cameron, who then got booed.

We think Serena needs her own meme. So we made her one.

3) Not to be lumped in with the crying memes, Serena Williams made history Saturday with her 22nd grand slam singles title, tying Steffi Graf, who called Serena “a gift to all sport fans.” In attendance, America’s version of Will & Kate: Jay Z & Beyoncé. (Remember Serena twerking in Bey’s “Sorry” video? Watch it again. There are no sports on today anyway.) Congrats to one of the greatest athletes of all time. And thankfully we can all move on from #nipplegate now.

4) Finally, one more person who might be crying? This Tour de France spectator in the yellow wig who got punched by leader Chris Froome in the 8th stage. Or maybe Chris Froome because he got fined. The Tour de France is one of cycling’s Grand Tours — it began on July 2 in Normandy and ends in Paris on July 24.
