Introducing the GND4CPS
I’ve written a couple pieces here about the intersection between education and the climate crisis — my frustration with the climate crisis not being taught in school and my vision for a sustainable future for education.
Fortunately I was able to channel that energy into a project in my community. Last fall I joined Sunrise Chicago’s brand-new Green New Deal for Chicago Public Schools campaign. After interviewing community members, we came up with a set of demands. Our demands for this campaign include safe and clean buildings, pathways to green jobs, climate disaster response plans, a climate justice curriculum, healthy and sustainable meals, free public transit, community gardens and composting, and electric buses. We’ve already partially met our demand for electric school buses with a recent federal grant providing 50 electric school buses!
Right now we are primarily focused on gathering petition signatures. If you are a Chicago resident, please feel free to sign our petition and share it with your friends and family members in the area. We’re aiming to get 1000 petition signatures by the end of April.
