Here’s Why Women Have the Upper Hand When Dating

Hint: It’s not because we’re gatekeeping our vaginas

Last week, I wrote an article called Here’s What Happened When I Laid Out All My Baggage on First Dates.

It was part satire and part memoir. Basically, being transparent about my struggles and shortcomings weeded out incompatible people and helped me find a man who was vulnerable, emotionally intelligent, and an asset to my life.

The response was mostly positive. Of course, I did get a few critical, negative, or rude comments, which is to be expected when you put yourself out there on the internet — but then I realized:

All the critical, negative, or rude comments came from men.

“Nobody wants hear about one's personal problems unless they love you already,” one man wrote.

“We all have our issues for sure but I have learned that I have enough issues to deal with without taking in someone else’s bus load as well,” another commented.

And then I got this gem:

“Women are massively privileged in the dating market […] You are extremely socially awkward, and men just accept it […] And women, such as you, have the nerve to complain about dating, and have the nerve to…
