I start every notebook with a quote. Often, but not always, a writer’s quote.

I think of the person I’m quoting as that notebook’s guardian spirit. So, for a writer’s notebook, it definitely makes sense to choose a writer. Afterall, writers have shaped who I am as a human being.

Octavia Butler is the guardian of my new notebook. Here’s the quote I chose:

And I have this little litany of things they can do. And the first one, of course, is to write — every day, no excuses. It’s so easy to make excuses. Even professional writers have days when they’d rather clean the toilet than do the writing.

I’ve picked my notebook. And wrote my quote right inside the front cover.

I am a professional writer. And there are, most definitely, days when I’drather clean the toilet than do the writing. But I show up. Every single day.
