This is part 4 of 7 from our series The jrnal Manifesto, leading up to our official launch on June 28th. We will be releasing a new part every other day, so watch this space!

Besides the fact that every publication on jrnal has to be singular, we get to the heart of discovery with a new generation of publications. You likely haven’t heard of them yet, but we bet you’ll love them as much as we do.

Mainstream magazines lost their luster

Things got stale, long-reads no longer rule, and ads have gained too much influence over the editorial direction. Crafting the magazine is not dictated by creativity but rather by advertising obligations. All in all, those publishers are no longer truly speaking to their readers.

As long as they don’t turn things around, you won’t see Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar or Cosmopolitan on jrnal… instead, you’ll find an ode to the NextGen

The NextGen shows us that all mediums have a role in the future of information. They’re finding new ways to breathe and exist. And while almost all started by concentrating on print, they are succeeding magnificently across all formats. Importantly, they show exactly what was wrong in mainstream publications.

  • They are made of timeless stories that are wonderfully written well-designed and collectible .
  • They are edited by passionate people (Mundial / Boat) and based on a wisely chosen subject matter.
  • They are engaged (Bitch / Causette), tough, refreshing (The Gentlewoman, Dazed, Perdiz). To put it simply, they feel like us.

As part of the NextGen, we’d also highlight the internet-based new media. From investigative journalism (Mediapart), those delivering vital and highly specialized news (The Information) to the most outstanding newsletter out there (Brief me) — all would be welcomed on jrnal.

Worth mentioning that we don’t have them all — yet ;)
