How to Find Inspiration for your Logo Design

An organization’s logo is the core of their brand identity. It is the face of the brand and isn’t something that gets overhauled or even refreshed often. It shows up online, in print, on packaging, even on uniforms, and free pens. Your client’s, or your own, business needs a lasting, recognizable symbol representative of its personality. Whether you are a logo design master or a new entrepreneur it can be tough to know where to start. Here are a few ideas for getting inspired.

Identify the Brand

First and foremost, nail down some core elements of the brand personality. This may or may not already exist in some form depending on if this a mature organization looking to refresh their image or a brand new company just getting started. Start with things like mission statements, values, long term goals, and target customers. If those don’t exist yet, that’s ok. You can help flesh them out at the same time. Brainstorm adjectives that describe your organization. Are you trustworthy? Are you trendy and fun? Make sure these adjectives are in line with your product or service as well as your customer demographics. Some banks and insurance companies are lightening up their image to appeal to younger customers but older groups may still prefer that these types of institutions portray themselves as trustworthy and stable.

From there, think of other well-known brands that have similar values. They don’t need to be in the same industry, you’re looking for the feelings these organizations evoke. For example, if happiness or fun is one of your adjectives you might look to companies like Amazon, IHOP, Crayola, and LG and find that many include obvious or hidden smiles.

Trends can be tricky. If your intent is to freshen up a dated image, you’ll need to know what traits are going to make a redesign look more modern. On the other hand, if that trend is out next year, your logo is going to be looking dated before it’s done much for your brand. Look for articles on design trends on popular design sites like Dribbble, Canva, or Behance. But be sure to review the why’s and not just the examples. The flat design trend has been around for a while, but it’s starting to be replaced with a “near flat” trend that includes subtle depth through shading and shadowing. Paying attention to the details can help you find an on-message style that will have some longevity. Alternatively, check out design sites like LogoPond which are focused directly on logos.

Graphics marketplace sites are another great source for popular current design trends and ideas. These sites, like Pixelify and Creative Market, offer graphic sets, templates, and fonts for purchase. The second reason to consider a course is to simply get your creativity jump-started. Doing something creative in a similar discipline can help get your brain firing and thinking about things new ways.
