Imagine for a second that your car had an engine like this:
1,000 Horsepower, 12-cylinder, liquid-cooled… and built by Rolls Royce.

Now, imagine this car was able to speed up to 580 km / 360 miles per hour and fly at heights up to 10,400 metres / 34,000 miles. That would probably be every kids’ dream car, right?

Well, in the 2nd World War, some “lucky” pilots were able to drive this car — except… it was a plane: The Spitfire.

From Dunkirk to D-Day and beyond, these planes turned the tide in the many battles fought in the air on a regular basis — faster and more maneuverable than comparable German planes, the Spitfire pilots had the ideal tool for the job at hand.

We have gained access to secret codes used by Allied Radio Frequencies and will be able to provide some Time Raiders with the ability to call in air support from close-by Spitfires… to make it rain bullets on your enemies!

About 160 bullets per second, to be exact. At least if the plane that answers your call is one of the earlier versions that were equipped with eight .303 Browning Mk II machineguns, bringing a hail of lead. Later versions brought four 0.8-inch (20-mm) automatic cannons… also nothing to scoff at.

With over 20,000 Spitfires built over the war, not including naval variants, they surely won’t mind if we divert a few of those to aid in our missions, right?

First Plane to shoot down fighter jets… and missiles!

King of the Skies

As the war progressed, so did the Spitfire versions. Up to the point where the engines were so powerful that the plane could keep up not only with German jet fighters but also with German Missiles.

The first German Me 262 jet fighter that was ever shot down fell prey to a Spitfire…

And if you remember the V1 Rocket, also known as Doodlebug from Helen’s Briefing on Long-Range Weaponry, then you know it’s a powerful thing. But nonetheless… Spitfires managed to not only catch up with some of these, but they also shot them down.

Imagine flying a plane fast enough to catch a rocket!

Let’s hope the V1s we use on our missions aren’t intercepted.

In-Mission Use: Instructions

Since we Time Raiders have to work in small teams, it can easily happen that we’re outnumbered… heavily.

In a case like that, air support is key.

Even though it’s not necessarily intended for this, the Spitfire can offer the firepower we need, much like the A-10 Warthog with its powerful BRRRRT minigun, a shower of bullets can always come in handy. As long as it’s not aimed at you, that is.

If you’ve been provided our secret access codes to the Allied Radio Frequencies, you will be able to call in a quick air attack of a Spitfire strafing the ground with a machinegun barrage of fire.

Careful though! Be sure to make good use of this, we can not allow the Allies to learn that these codes have been accessed, or they will be changed sooner or later. For this reason, sir support from Spitfires will have to be used sparingly and we will restrict you to a limited number of uses within each day.

We suspect that later missions will require access to hard-to-access islands, which will only be able to be accessed by a Spitfire or Lancaster Bomber able to slip through enemy radars. Don’t worry about this on your first few missions though.
