What Jupiter Means in Astrology

Western astrology was developed by the Romans and as you may know, Rome ‘adopted’ many of the ancient Greek gods and their stories and myths.

To understand the archetypal potential that Jupiter has in astrology — and specifically in a chart — it helps to know the myth and the intricacies of all the stories related to its evolution.

Jupiter (Zeus in ancient Greek mythology) was the biggest god in Ancient Rome, where astrology as we know it today, began.

Jupiter was the last born of Saturn and Rhea (Ops according to other sources). I’ve written here in depth about Saturn’s meaning in astrology. Saturn ate his children as soon as they were born, because he was cursed to be overthrown by one of his offspring.

But after never having the chance to enjoy her children, his wife Rhea/Ops, had enough and as soon as she gave birth to her last child — Jupiter — she secretly gave him to the nymphs to raise him, and instead gave Saturn a rock to swallow. (Hardly makes sense, but that’s the myth).

Adrastea and Ida, the Melisse nymphs, raised Jupiter with honey and milk from the goat named Amalthea. He grew strong enough within one year to go punish his father. Helped by the goddess Metis, he freed his brothers and sisters…
