Rethinking Liquidity Mining Rewards

Rewards as the backbone to crypto

Rewards / Incentives / Liquidity Mining are a fundamental part of crypto. Proof of work (Bitcoin mining) is providing “something” for rewards (in proof of work, providing security and electricity to earn crypto).

Liquidity mining is the market-making technique providing rewards, in the form of native tokens, to those who provide liquidity.

The issue with liquidity mining rewards

As liquidity mining grew, some, non-deal-breaking flaws became apparent. The following have the most negative impact:

Liquidity “locusts” who drain liquidity in a project
Token loyalty, or opportunistic dumping

Across all EVM networks (Ethereum, Polygon, Smart Chain, Avalanche, Etc), when the incentive period is over, liquidity begins to quickly disappear. Even projects aggressively providing incentives that appear to last for a solid period of time see major impacts on token price, which from public perception, is a case of “price goes down, the project is a scam”.

At its core, the problem is a “something for nothing” problem. If you receive something for nothing, you will simply bank your profits. We see this with token airdrops, excessively high APY farming rewards and pre-launches.

With AMM leading the technique for setting market value, buying behavior inherently improves price. Rather than giving the rewards directly, for nothing — a system allowing a user to buy tokens at the reward price shifts behavior and sell pressure resulting in a more sustainable liquidity pool.

Replacing the network token for the Toast ecosystem will enable the features needed to properly execute this strategy.
