The Unfounded Field Guide for Founders

I’ve been an entrepreneur for more years than I’ve been, basically, anything else. We’re a weird breed of enthusiast, cynic, optimistic and pessimist all at the same time. It’s wonderful and awful, all at the same time.

As a founder, you’ll encounter an ever-expanding universe of characters along the way. Some will excite you, others will snatch the life right out of your eyes. Most, though, are generally good people — filled with the same quarks and oddities that make us all unique.

Of course, just because they’re unique doesn’t mean they don’t also “fit the type”. You know, the “You Know You’re A _____ If _____” thing that everyone knows deep down but they can’t usually say out loud until their eyeballs are floating in contempt.

This Field Guide is designed to help you identify and prepare for the many species of rare characters you’ll encounter along your journey. Godspeed.

Each post will be expressed as a tongue-in-cheek list of qualities for each of the unique characters we call employees. You’ll know if you’re using this guide right if you’re chuckling as you read. Note, if you’re shaking your fists, you’re using it wrong — have a drink and try again.

New entries will be made semi-regularly, so please follow to get updates!
