1.0 Recap

Yesterday, I continued with the video series from Marc Hassenzahl, a UX professor talking about Experience Design. Here is a recap.

2.0 Assignments

Today, I focused more on the two assignments that were given after watching Marc Hassenzahl videos. Here are the questions and my responses:

2.1 Question 1

Marc Hassenzahl states what you should design for user needs and emotions (why) before you consider the what and how of a product. Marc is not focused on the business side of design, but his guidelines have an impact on profitability as well. In 10–20 lines explain how focusing on user needs and emotions can impact the Return on Investment of your design.

My response

Creating products that solve a user’s problem has to do with the user and the designer communicating together. Users needs have to always be put into consideration when a designer is creating a design solution.

When a user has an amazing experience when using a product based on the fact that the product is easy to use, it’s accessible and the user can form an emotional connection or bond to the product, this will increase the Return on Investment of your design. Creating the right product based on user’s needs prevents changes that may be considered or needed in the future, which will also prevent the company from spending more time and money.

2.2 Question 2

Professionals from a number of different disciplines are now enlisted during the development of products, systems, devices and other items intended for human users. However, these professionals bring their own biases and collection of tried-and-tested methods to the design process, which have the potential to draw focus away from experiential factors. Please identify and outline one method all professionals involved in a design process could employ to ensure their focus is firmly focused on the experience associated with a product. Feel free to use your imagination and creativity.

My response

For me, I think to have a user as a point of focus will ensure that professionals don’t derail from the experience they are trying to create with a product they are designing. They need to care about the user’s happiness and think about telling the user’s story.

If collectively, they have the user’s needs in mind or share same empathy with users, they will definitely come up with an experience that the user will appreciate.

3.0 Resources

The best way to learn is by asking questions and letting people know how you understand the topic. Feel free to leave a comment, we will definitely learn from it🙂.
