Another experiment: A FlakPhoto Curatorial Takeover for BPB16.

Hey photo peeps! Like many of you, I believe in the creative potential Instagram gives imagemakers to share their vision with the world. IG is also a platform with tons of possibility for connecting audiences to images in interesting, innovative ways. There’s clearly so much more to the app than posting selfies and breakfast pictures. Right?

I’m showing photographers daily on Instagram and I’m having a blast.

For the past six months I’ve been experimenting with a simple concept: can the mobile photography app be a creative space for curatorial practice? The answer, I think, is a resounding yes. So, this Fall I’m pushing the experiment further and teaming up with Photoworks UK to stage a real-time Instagram happening for this year’s Brighton Photo Biennial.

I hope you’ll be a part of it.

Submission is easy: Tag your Self Styled images at Instagram hashtag #FlakPhotoBPB16

What are we looking for?

BPB16 sets out to explore understandings of identity and representation — our personal and projected image — as influenced by the pervasive genre of fashion and style photography. Photoworks is launching Issue 23 of the Photoworks Annual, Self Styled, at the Biennial. In the spirit of both BPB16 and this year’s Annual publication, we want to see images that depict:

  • Representations of the body, gender and sexuality
  • Photography’s function within the fashion business
  • The politics of subcultures and tribes
  • Identity and representation
  • Street fashions, trends, ideas of identity and cult

Who is eligible to submit?

The FlakPhoto BPB16 Takeover is open to all art practitioners using photography and contributors may be located anywhere in the world. There is no age limit and no requirement for art school or university education.

Applicants are required to maintain an Instagram account to participate. The call for images is open now and will close on Saturday, October 29, 2016.

I’ll show selected images on the Photoworks Instagram feed throughout the run of this year’s Brighton Photo Biennial, 1–30 October 2016.

How to participate

Submission is FREE and open to photographers everywhere. To submit your work for consideration, tag your Self Styled Instagram images with hashtag #FlakPhotoBPB16. You may submit as many images as you like. Looking forward to seeing your stuff. Have fun with this.

I’d love more people to hear about this project — Please share with photography friends. And, if you’re on Medium, you can recommend this story by touching the ❤ at the bottom of the article. Thank you!
