2019 Deep dive on the NYC and US East Coast Venture Capital Ecosystem
Following in the footsteps of the reports that we have published on Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, and South Korea, we are delighted to share our newest report covering the NYC and US East Coast Venture Capital ecosystem. This report focuses not only on NYC but also includes Boston, which has been a long term power in the East Coast’s VC ecosystem, as well as emerging states including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, each of which have had at least two companies raise mega-rounds of $100m or more.
At White Star, our pace of investment in the East Coast continues to grow. The most recent additions to our portfolio include New York City’s Parsley Health and Spatial, along with a few other investments that we hope to soon announce. The founders of these NYC-based companies originate from many countries: TheGuarantors’ CEO Julien Bonneville hails from France, Unacast’s Thomas Walle is Norwegian, Spatial’s founders Anand Agarawala and Jinha Lee are respectively Canadian and Korean, and of course, we have many American founders including Freshly’s Michael Wystrach, KeyMe’s Greg Marsh and Parsley Health’s Robin Berzin, to name a few.
Since the close of our first fund in 2014, White Star’s New York City office has significantly grown — we now have a team of more than 10 people on the ground. We are also currently interviewing candidates for a full-time technologist associate (job description here) from candidates with expertise in software development and/or data science as well as internships (apply here).
In addition to sharing our excitement for New York City, Boston, and the entire East Coast, the report digs into some key findings and insights around the VC landscape. New York City alone is the 2nd largest VC ecosystem in the western world and is in the top five globally. We are the home of enterprise startups catering to the Fortune 500, of the top consumer and D2C startups targeting the most prominent shopping market in North America, and of FinTech, RealEstate Tech and Digital Health startups. Not to mention, no other ecosystem has as high of a density of top universities.
We are proud to call NYC and the East Coast our home and we look forward to continue investing in the area’s most promising companies.
