Remember when I said the fitness industry is expected to reach $62,128 million by 2023? Well, today we’re gonna talk in-depth about Fitness Tracking and how the technology at our disposal really helps us achieve it.

Everyone wants to be fit. It’s the best way to take care of yourself. Tracking your fitness helps achieve your goals in the most optimized way, forces you to push your limits and do better every day. Have you ever thought about the technology that makes fitness tracking possible? Let’s dive deep into a little BTS on what makes Activity and Fitness tracking possible.

What’s the hardware used in Fitness Trackers?

Just like most gesture recognition devices, fitness trackers rely on a plethora of sensors to capture motion data, sending that data to a mobile app (usually).

So what are these motion trackers?

Accelerometers, Gyroscopes and Compasses are what make it possible.

Accelerometers like the name suggest, measure acceleration based on the rate of change of velocity and with what intensity the action was made. Gyroscopes determine the orientation of an object in space based on the earth’s gravity. Compasses, well we all know what they do, tell us the cardinal directions.

With these sensors in its arsenal, the tracker is able to get hold of all data required to be able to calculate things like steps taken, distance traveled, speed, cadence and calories burned. In fact, with the use of accelerometers, trackers can ever tell you how well you sleep!

Now you may be wondering, where does the Vicara Motion Engine come in?

I mean the hardware is all in there, right? Why is VME even required, you may ask. Let us understand how VME makes data processing easier in a robust way by enhancing the quality of gestures it captures.

When we’re talking about micro-interactions, the slightest of movements need to be captured and taken into consideration during the data processing phase. With VME, data-parsing becomes seamless as it gets transferred to the device. So in essence the device where the data would be processed is already receiving pre-processed data which increases the quality of results obtained.

If any of that tech jargon didn’t make sense to you, think of it as a middleman between your tracker and your connected device that is enhancing the quality of data being sent.

How does that help you as a user?

Better data means a better understanding of the gestures being done by you which translates to you getting a more accurate result when you open your tracking app.

So in essence the VME acts like a gatekeeper for the correct data to be passed and helps in correcting any erroneous data. Consider it the Gandalf of the data processing world.
