This is part two of our annual summer new book preview. Part One focused on titles related to social and racial justice. To conclude, we will cover self-help legal titles, domestic relations, environmental and climate change law, and legal history.

Nolo Legal Self-Help Books

Nolo Publishing has been writing self-help legal books since 1971. They are a trusted resource for self-represented litigants and the law library recently refreshed its Nolo collection with the following titles:

Every Tenant’s Legal Guide (9th edition), by Attorney Janet Portman & Marcia Stewart, KF590 .Z9 P67 2018. Topics covered in this volume include termination and eviction, lease and rental agreements, repairs and maintenance, getting injured on the property, and much more. Online access to downloadable digital forms is available with this title.

Neighbor Law: Fences, Trees, Boundaries & Noise (10th edition), by Attorneys Emily Doskow & Lina Guillen, KF639 .J67 2020. This book covers the laws behind many common neighbor disputes, including boundaries, trees, blocked views, and barking dogs. The guide also touches on mediation and small claims court.

The Complete IEP Guide: How to Advocate for Your Special Ed Child (10th edition), by Attorney Lawrence M. Siegel, KF4209.3 .S57 2020. From the publisher: “The 10th edition includes summaries of important court decisions, expanded information on independent evaluations and bullying, and additional real-life tips. It provides key forms, sample letters, and resources you need at every stage of the IEP process.”

Environment, Climate Change, and Public Health

Historian John Witt explores, from a legal perspective, how reactions to public health crises of the past have impacted the current response to COVID-19. Fire: A Brief History, by Stephen J. Pyne, GN416 .P85 2019. As of this posting, wildland firefighters are battling over 15 large fires across Washington State. Hundreds of thousands of acres in the Pacific Northwest are scorched by fire each year. This newly acquired volume, published by University of Washington Press, was written by the world’s leading authority on the history of fire, according to Science magazine.

Wildfire Policy: Law and Economics Perspectives, edited by Karen M. Bradshaw and Dean Lueck, KF3977 .W55 2012. A collection of essays by law and economics scholars, this work tackles the difficult questions of public policy surrounding climate change and wildfires. Some topics covered include tort liability, regulatory frameworks and their impact on prescribed burning, and wildfire suppression policy.
