A proposal for the ultimate collection

The announcement of CD-singles box sets for Bananarama and Belinda Carlisle by Edsel Records had many pop fans salivating with glee. Both sets are set to include all the versions of most of their singles, comprising 33 and 29 discs respectively. What’s more, both sets include previously unreleased material.

The only gripe might be that the Bananarama set ends prematurely, with the 1993 single ’More More More’. This is down to record company politics: after 1993 Bananarama left London Records, releasing subsequent albums and singles with different other labels.

Moving on to Kim Wilde

There is no doubt that a similar box set comprising Kim Wilde’s singles output from the Eighties and Nineties would create a lot of interest. Recent re-releases of her Eighties albums have been solid sellers for Cherry Pop Records and Universal respectively. Having been involved in all these re-releases, I thought it would be an idea to outline what a box set like this would look like. Everybody knows that record companies don’t have the time to research all the tracks; even tracking them down in the archives often proves to be a difficult task. With this article at least half of the job has been done.

So without further stalling, take a look at the 35 disc box set of Kim Wilde CD-singles. Tracks denoted with * have never been released on CD before.

Some final words

This listing of tracks is complete as far as released versions are concerned. Most of the singles were originally released in the UK, with the exception of ‘House Of Salome’ (which was a Europe-only release), ‘Schoolgirl’ (Europe & Australia), ‘Can’t Get Enough (Of Your Love)’ (Europe & Australia), ‘Million Miles Away’ (Europe) and ‘Kids In America 1994’ (Europe).

It is of course unknown what lies hidden in the vaults. Scattering some previously unreleased tracks on these discs would certainly increase the collector’s interest. Especially the material from the EMI period (the first 9 discs) has been released countless times on compilation albums, so it would be interesting if something could be found to make that part of the box set more interesting.

Whether this box set will ever be officially released remains to be seen. In the mean time, those fans who already own all of the tracks may use this list to compile their own playlists. You can be sure that no officially released track is missing. Unless, of course, you know something I don’t. I’d love to hear from you!
