Book recommendation for marketing, advertising, and copywriting professionals: The Boron Letters by Gary Halbert

“You Must Always Find A Market First… And Then Concentrate On A Product!”
― Gary Halbert, Copywriter, Newsletter Publisher, Best-Selling Author, and Successful Entrepreneur.

When I first read The Boron Letters, I was an amateur copywriter. I was still learning the tricks of the trades. And this quote, the one above, made a significant impact on me.

Since then, I have insisted on doing thorough market research before I start writing copy. And it always got good conversions. 😊

Great copywriting isn’t just about writing. It is more about the amount of research that goes into writing.

  • Researching what the target audience wants
  • Picking the core USP based on the research
  • Deciding on an enticing offer

And more! The Boron Letters talks about all of them.

The book is a collection of letters written by Gary Halbert (from prison) to his son. The Foreword of the book explains why you need to read it way better than I can!🙈

Gary Halbert is a copywriting legend. There’s no doubt about that. And although there are tons of marketing books out there, The Boron Letters offers several helpful tips to those looking to improve their marketing skills. The book focuses on copywriting, branding, and marketing businesses.

Here is my take on the book:

  1. The book is dated. It is definitely not a good source for the latest marketing strategies and tips. BUT, it is a BRILLIANT foundational read. All the basics you want to learn about marketing, you’ll find them here.
  2. The letters are personal. Along with marketing tips, you will also get a lot of “life lessons” by Halbert.
  3. This is an excellent book recommendation for budding entrepreneurs as well. It is one of the rare books that offer a holistic view of marketing and how you can get better at it.

This is the second suggestion in my Copywriting Book Recommendation series. For my take on Confessions of an Advertising Man by David Ogilvy, check out: Book Recommendation: A Must-Read for All Beginner (and Professional) Copywriters

Hope you enjoy reading the book. Do tell me what you think.

What is your go-to copywriting book? Do recommend in the comments.
