It could be a good time to sign on as a writer

Medium publication The Startup with nearly half a million subscribers seems to be very generous in accepting and approaching new writers at present.

If you are not already a writer there and have an unpublished draft in the wings, their range of topics seems to have expanded widely, take a look at what they are currently publishing and see if you think your work may fit.

From my count, they publish between 30 and 60 articles and stories a day. Each of these will stay on the front page of their website for two days and then slide into archives unless they begin to trend, which means get a lot of views and engagement. They also have a selection called the top five stories.

If you are looking for a new and wider audience this could be another good publication to add to your list. Bear in mind nothing is guaranteed and a story may get few reads and engagement, that is always a risk, even where there are a large number of subscribers.

One interesting fact I noticed after publishing on The startup, was a lot of views come from outside Medium, from a site called Flipboard which claims to have 145 million subscribers.

One of the terms of publishing (on Flipboard) is that they do not allow paywalled stories, any links submitted must be free. I’m not sure how The Startup deals with this. The result is that you would be unlikely to get any paying claps from this source.

Here is an image of statistic sources, from a recent article I published on The Startup:

Notice most traffic is coming from outside of Medium itself.

I wrote earlier, depending on who you are writing to specifically and whether you have add-on marketing products this may still have value to your purpose.

Read the guidelines and submit your story here. Don’t be put off by the seeming limitation of the subject matter. I’m pretty sure the editors will consider most subjects if it is spun or nuanced toward their audience and of course, well written.
