Her warm smile disappeared as soon as she heard him say, “I’m sorry.” Her face, now contorted with anger and disappointment, turned into a grimace.
Kevin knew he fucked up. He opened his hand and held it up for her to see the fragments of a broken cell phone screen inside a piece of the cotton shirt her husband wore to work that morning.
“This is all I could find,” he said. “He’s not where I left him. I looked everywhere.”
“Go look again,” she said. Then snatching the items from his hands, she slammed the front door behind her.
