In the same weekend as DigitUp17 I was also asked to give 2 workshops about “What is Minecraft?” for kids. CC Deurne organised a game event called Push the Button. The event was a launch weekend for their game road-show.

They have created several games and enclosures for this event, there where Coder Dojo sessions, Minecraft sessions and a arcade hall. And in the coming months they will be on tour in Antwerp every time in another cultural center or library.

Workshop’s

The first workshop started right after breakfast which was provided by CC Deurne, the special thing about this event is the location, I was provided the cinema room which was a small theatre with a stage. I starte with a presentation about “What is Minecraft?” where I go over all parts of Minecraft and after that there was a hands on session. In this session the objective was to build a house, digg a mine, create a garden with veggies and a fence with some animals. And at 11:30 the second workshop started.

Build Battle

I have always dreamed about a Minecraft competition in movie theaters. And so in the afternoon I had the chance to organise a Minecraft Build Battle at this beautful venue.

In a build battle players get a space, time, unlimited resources and an objective. Players will build something which refers to the objective. When time is up blocks go down and players can vote on each others build, so after every round we have a winner and resulted in 6 winners.

Of course things did not went very smooth, first of all I am not sure if the wifi was stable enough for 30 players and second of all I have misjudged the skills of the young crafters. A colleague of mine had created a Minecraft mod to run Build Battles and you could join, vote and clear your field via commands and there was the issue. I noticed that 40 seconds was not enough for the crafters to vote and the whole concept of using commands did not work at all.

So we ended up to do the Build Battle manually instead of using the server and the mod. At the end the crafters were happy several had won a price and had some good fun in a unique venue.

Want to book me for a Minecraft workshop or as a speaker about Kids & Coding? Let me know and we meet with a coffee. info@webwizart.be
