Hey Yang Gang,

Rarely do we get crystal clear trends from the Yang Gang Wisdom surveys, but in this latest “how were you persuaded?” survey we got two very important ones. First, the Yang Gang believes overwhelmingly that the person who will be facing off against Andrew Yang in the Democratic primary will be Elizabeth Warren. We predict she is six times more likely to be in the final two than Biden. This is very different from the betting line odds which have Warren and Biden very close.

This doesn’t mean that the Yang Gang is made up of Warren supporters. Actually we are as diverse in our alternative preferences for President as we are in race, where we live, and political beliefs. The Yang Gang would support a wide variety of candidates if Andrew wasn’t running and many of us wouldn’t even vote if it weren’t for Yang. I believe that continuing to activate those normally disengaged in politics will be one of the keys to us winning the Democratic Primary.

Most Effective Communication

This latest survey also showed that by far the most common way that people came to the Yang Gang were through online videos and podcasts. Most online videos of Yang are also those of him being interviewed or on podcasts. It just shows that if given a long enough period of uninterrupted conversation, most people will appreciate what Yang has to say.

What’s more it only took one or two times of hearing Yang before most people knew that they wanted to support him. This means one thing and one thing only, when in doubt, share podcasts, videos, interview clips as much as possible.

New vs Original Yang Gang

Most of the Yang Gang came between January and March 2019, which is when Andrew appeared on the Joe Rogan podcast and kicked off a wave of support that continues to today.

These original Yang Gang members who supported Yang before March 2019 were mostly convinced via podcasts compared to the average.

Newer members who heard of Yang after March 2019 have a different story. If they joined after the first Rogan wave, then they are much more likely to have been convinced via video, social media, and television. In fact, newer Yang Gang members were five times more likely to have been convinced of Yang via television. This shouldn’t be surprising as the campaign continues to break through mainstream media and the Yang Gang continues to spread the word online through social media and sending videos.

The Podcast President

Sharing podcasts and videos works so well because Yang has appeared in long form conversations that are unedited and uncut with people from a wide variety of political beliefs. Since the entire Yang message and campaign is unusual, long form conversations lets the facts sink in that an Asian man running for president that wants to give every American $1000 a month could actually work. Whenever in doubt of what to do, or how to respond, it seems the best strategy is to send a podcast or video or clip depending on who your audience is.

Suggested Podcasts for:

Mainstream or older Liberals: The Daily from the NY Times (This is the best introduction for mainstream Democrats to Yang. It is only 30 minutes and covers all the basic points)

Younger Liberals: The Breakfast Club

Conservatives: The Ben Shapiro Show or Rubin Report

Non-Political: Joe Rogan Experience

Forward

We’ve done three surveys so far with the Who is the Yang Gang one being the most popular and likely to surpass 1000 respondents soon, but what next? I just want to take a moment and reflect to see what you think and feel about how this whole Yang Gang Wisdom experiment is going and how we can turn this little newsletter/ survey system into something more effective and useful.

Our goal is to use the Yang Gang’s collective wisdom to increase awareness, donations, and support for Andrew Yang, but how do we know we’re actually doing that? Would it be better if Yang Gang Wisdom was geared more toward collecting the most interesting news, events, and volunteering efforts and sending it out as a weekly newsletter?

Please help complete this new feedback form to let us know how we can do better:

Raw Responses

For clarity, I have edited some of the responses before publishing, but you can see the complete unedited responses and data here:

I tried my best to keep the original intent of the answer and no answers were edited in order to manipulate the final results.

Never miss a new survey or new result by subscribing to the Yang Gang Wisdom newsletter.
