Once in a lifetime-Erasmus
Would you like to learn about my experiences in the Erasmus+ Exchange Program, which came from Ege University, and I studied in the International Relations Bachelor’s program at Mykolas Romeris University?
Hey! I hope you are having an amazing day. I’m Simge, a fresh graduate of the Department of International Relations at Ege University Izmir (Türkiye). I had been an Erasmus student at Mykolas Romeris University in Vilnius (Lithuania), during the second semester of the academic year 2022/2023. I spent more than 5 months in Vilnius, from the start of February until the end of June, especially during the summer months, I enjoyed this wonderful land a little more, which offers incredible surprises and adventures every day.
Thanks to the Erasmus program, I had the chance to explore a country inside the EU. From the architecture to the local customs, made me feel connected to this new place. The people were welcoming and eager to share their culture, and I enjoyed learning about their traditions while sharing a bit of my own. Even though there were differences compared to my country, especially in politics and economy, the core values of community and cultural appreciation were the same. I still remember the day I left for my Erasmus journey. My mind was filled with a mix of emotions: the fear and excitement of facing the unknown, the joy of starting something new, and the sadness of leaving home, even if just for a few months. Suddenly, I found myself in a new country, surrounded by a different language, new people, and a completely different way of life. And that’s when the adventure really started!
One of the best parts of my Erasmus experience was the international community, especially the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and MRU International Office. They were incredibly active and engaging, organizing events, trips, and activities that made it easy to connect with other students from around the world. The teachers were kind and available during classes also actively engaged in extracurricular activities. We regularly participated in volleyball and yoga sessions, and table tennis games in the dormitory were a fun way to strengthen our social connections. These activities added a vibrant, communal aspect to our experience and helped build lasting friendships.
I also had the chance to go on numerous trips with other young people from the community. By the age of 22, I had traveled to 11 different countries, each journey offering new experiences and connections. These adventures were a highlight of my time abroad, allowing me to explore diverse cultures and meet people from all over the world. Most importantly, Lithuania: is a country rich in history and stunning landscapes (such as Vilnius, Trakai Castle, and the Palanga Beach), not to mention its unique forests and other natural beauties.
I transformed through Erasmus. The experience has been a significant growth journey, both educationally and personally. Beyond the studies, it offered the chance to meet people from around the world and connect with locals, immersing myself in the host country’s culture. I improved my English, gained confidence, and learned to embrace new challenges. Leaving my comfort zone encouraged me to face fears, overcome prejudices, and continue learning. Studies show that 85% of Erasmus participants see career benefits, including higher positions and increased salaries. Erasmus isn’t just a program; it’s a life-changer that opens doors to global opportunities and a broader international perspective!
I highly recommend taking part in this experience. It will change your life for the better and open you up to new horizons!
