Transformational Summer Challenge: Day 3
Describe a failure you experienced
Success is good, failure is bad. This belief is so deep-rooted in our paradigm that it seems strange to question it. But we all should question it.
Believing that failure is bad is one of the key obstacles that stop us from progressing and developing. Believing that failure is bad does not make us try harder; it makes us not try at all, because experiencing a failure can be unbearable.
It is sad to see how children are conditioned from a very young age to internalise a fear of failure. If they succeed, they receive praise and love. If they fail, they are reprimanded and made to feel ashamed, unworthy even. It is no wonder that the vast majority of us prefer to stay in line rather than venturing out and risking that things will not go as well as we wish.
What if we flipped the belief around? That is, what if we started to believe that neither success nor failure are good or bad? They are just normal occurrences that every single person is bound to experience.
Failure is a valuable tool of self-exploration. Failing teaches us lessons that would otherwise remain concealed. In many ways, failure is much more important than success. Let us learn to celebrate failure.
Your today’s task is to share a failure you experienced (and, if you want to, the lessons you learned). The purpose of this task is twofold: 1. To see that failure is commonplace and everyone experiences it, and 2. To get rid of the shame and insecurity that often accompanies failure by letting it out in the open.
Remember — success isn’t good; it’s just success. Failure isn’t bad; it’s just failure. They are both inevitable components of our journey of life.
