Things that go bump in the night might be scary — is it a Demogorgon or your furnace?
Our handymen described strange things you might encounter in your home and what to about them.
Mysteriously Closing Doors
Doors closing on their own usually means that the hinges are out of alignment. Make sure that the top hinge is directly over the bottom hinge. Check to see if any loose screws are holding the hinges in place, tightening them should take care of the problem.
Scary Noises
Startled awake by screeching or scraping noises? You might have an issue with your furnace. Knocking, clicking, loud booms, rattling, clanking, and chirping are not noises your furnace should be making. When you hear strange sounds, it’s time to contact an HVAC expert.
Something is Coming Through the Wall
Is it making a noise? Does it sound like scratching? Is the sound moving? It’s time to contact a pest control expert.
Do you see bulges in the wall? Is there water seeping through? First, call a plumber, then you’ll need a handyman to fix your drywall and paint.
Is your paint blistering? Bubbling and blistering paint are often caused by painting in direct sunlight on a surface that is too warm. It’s usually best to consult with a professional painter. Often the paint needs to be scraped, and the area needs to be sanded before new paint can go up.
Swamp Creature in Your Pipes
If you’ve heard banging noises coming from your walls when you flush the toilet or run the washing machine, you could have a water hammer. A water hammer can be a big thump that shakes the house, or a series of banging noises starting with a loud bang followed by several echoing sounds. Several things can cause this to happen, and there are several ways to fix it. You’ll want to contact a plumber who will not only find the source of the problem but who can fix it without breaking the bank.
Flickering Lights
First, check to see if your lightbulb is screwed in tightly. Next, check the light-switch. Toggle the light switch on and off or shut the light for a while before turning it back on. Sometimes it will fix itself. If you need to do this over and over, it’s time to replace the switch.
If you think that loose wiring or fluctuations in voltage are causing your lights to flicker, it’s time to contact an electrician. Electrical issues can be serious and cause significant damage if not caught early. If you aren’t sure, ask an electrician.
