Divergent paths in old town Pau, SW FR

Last of an 18 mo. series on AI, we explored The future is digital… only it’s not what you think!, AI isn’t coming… it’s here!, When is AI not AI?, Stop AI scraping your Internet data, When is AI good AI? & Part II, When is IT bad IT? and When is AI more than AI?. Here we explore a patent misuse and a cogent challenge neatly balancing human and AI pros & cons. Thanks for reading!

Bad Example

Right on the heels of my last post (top) lifting the lid on scary AI in Israeli military, we hear of its egregious use via investigative journalism — note that we moved from mainstream The Guardian to niche Al Jazeera Listening PostGenocide in Gaza: Enabled by AI, powered by Big Tech lays bare what has happened since last fall when AI falls in the wrong hands… and I don’t mean the dark web but a sovereign state!

This is what I meant by divergence: let’s stop wringing our hands or virtue-signalling around AI… the trains wreck has already happened!

Couterexample

On the other hand, here is a cogent study that really sums up the opportunities in distinguishing and properly balancing human and AI:

Author’s liner notes: I Challenged AI to Create a Better YouTube Channel Than Me… Here’s What Happened: In this video I created an AI automated YouTube channel to compete against a human run YouTube channel to see which channel could get more views and subscribers in a month.

Conclusion

Let’s repeat the concluding line offered twice before: to echo Mark Twain, “the reports of [human intelligence’s] death [vs. AI] are greatly exaggerated”.

Update: another bad apple in the crate, fake law firms sending fake desist notices, from Ars Technica.

Update 2: A thought-provoking video straight from an MIT Tech Review article by a journalist looking at deep fakes… using herself as a deep fake! I mean, look at the realism in her expression… and none of it is her!
