In From the Cold

Every breath today was an assault on the lungs, such was the chill in the air. It was a special kind of frigidity that lends itself to London, a biting slap on the cheek as one might expect from a haughty heiress that, in exuberance and in alcohol you had quite over confidently attempted to proposition. It was also slightly damp, or at least it attempted to be slightly damp, damp being the ground state for London. To walk outside today was to invite that damp and that bitter, biting cold — and whip-like wind if I had as yet omitted to mention it — to invite, as I was saying, these wintral elements into the very heart of your being where, as a malign squatter they would soon have taken up residence, shuttered the doors and proceeded to wreak havoc in every last available nook of your insides. When at last you may have ousted them from your essence, mayhaps with a cup of Assam or an appropriately liquorious toddy, their presence would continue to haunt for days yet to come, an embarrassing shiver at an inappropriate moment, or a smoker’s wheeze reminiscent of a snake’s death rattle. Yes, it was cold in London today. Thank God the sun was shining because, you know, we mustn’t grumble.
