Here’s something I know about myself: I’m not a perfectionist, but I have a seriously hard time not being good at something.

I’m aware of how that sounds.

Conceited. Arrogant.

But maybe you’re the same? Please, tell me you are.

It’s so hard to work toward something when every time you work on it, you feel like you suck.

I felt that way last week, when I was writing an essay for my MFA and I knew — I KNEW — I wasn’t doing a good job. It sucked. I don’t know why I can pound out blog posts and short stories and work on my novel, no problem, but academic papers make me freeze.

I feel that way every time I walk for 20 minutes and think…how in the hell is this going to lead to finishing an Iron Man?

It’s so hard.

But I keep plugging.
