“They’re called “unicorns” — companies that have soared to a $1 billion valuation or higher, based on fundraising. The billion-dollar tech startup was once the stuff of myth, but now they seem to be everywhere, backed by a bull market and a new generation of disruptive technology.”

Fortune first published The Unicorn List on January 22, 2015 in response to the rapid rise in the number of billion dollar private companies. The company initially released the list in conjunction with a cover story titled, “The Age of Unicorns”. The hooded unicorn featured to the right was the cover image, one that we’re fond of here at 500 Miles. Fortune’s list was last updated on August 25, 2015 as new company additions are made with each new version of the list (and companies that IPO are removed). Companies like Spotify, Dropbox, Nutanix, Stripe, Palantir, Docker and Zenefits and many other high growth firms make up this robust list. While the rarity of unicorns may be fading, the bar for becoming one has not fallen. Unicorns are high growth companies by nature, and this means employment opportunity for those who seek it.

Working at a Unicorn

With 112 US Based companies to browse through, one is certain to find an employer of significant interest to them. Helping to build and then continue to scale a billion dollar business is no small task, regardless of your specific role. As your employer grows, you as an employee will also grow and develop. Growth is good. Growth means jobs, innovation and prosperity. Unicorns are the epitome of growth.

“Unicorns are the epitome of growth.”

But what would it actually be like to work at a unicorn? What positions do these companies currently have open and do their employees enjoy working there? Where is the company headquartered? How many employees do they currently have? Just hold your horses, or unicorns for that matter. Ok so here’s the deal: these questions can now be answered conveniently in a mobile app. We have built a Stack (list of companies neatly arranged by certain attributes) from Fortune’s Unicorn list. This Stack is an excellent tool for discovering great companies, imagining yourself in a position there and moving towards landing a role.

Combining discovery & deep insights in a single app
