Eagle App is a desktop digital assets management tool that helps professionals collect, search, browse and organize all your design files, reference materials, digital assets. Their App features are great and very easy to use but surprisingly on their website they didn’t provide much on the syncing topic so I’d like to contribute to Eagle App community!

Instead of downloading your files to each device, you are able to set up Dropbox’s cloud sync service with Eagle App to synchronize all your Eagle library cross devices and even start team collaboration with ease!

How does Eagle App store files originally?

Eagle is a local-based DAM application, NOT a cloud product NOR provide synchronization abilities. Everything you save into Eagle will be placed in the Eagle Library, which is stored in the hard disk drive of your device.

Therefore, please take note even when you sync up Eagle Library on multiple devices via DropBox, the Eagle Library must exist in the local directory aka desktop to be read by Eagle.

In other words, this means syncing Eagle Library with DropBox DOESN’T help you save storage spaces, it only leverages DropBox’s syncing abilities to achieve sync/backup/team collab purposes as Eagle is eventually a local-based application without synchronization.

If you’d like to save storage space then the cloud service you might be seeking is Synology NAS, or else using an external hard drive might also be an option!

How to Set Up Team Collaboration on Eagle App through DropBox

Want to build a library for team collaboration on Eagle App? With DropBox syncing service, your team members will be able to share the same library together!

Before you start setting up Eagle App Team Collaboration, you need to know:

Eagle App is made an offline software, NOT a professional collaboration tool. Syncing with DropBox is only best for sharing the resources together, please avoid editing the same material at the same time while the synchronization is still in progress (such as classifying folders, adding labels, changing file names, etc.), causing different versions synchronization that eventually lead to multiple conflicting files.

In order to avoid the above situation, please coordinate the editing time for the same material or use the team library only for browsing and retrieving materials.

To set up team collaboration on Eagle App, please follow:

  1. All team members install DropBox for desktop App and the same Eagle App version
  2. One person creates a Eagle Library, then drag it to the DropBox sync folder on the desktop
  3. All team members login to DropBox for desktop, set the same Eagle library path that is located in DropBox

Then you’re now set to contribute to the same Eagle library!

  • Note: Same Eagle App license and DropBox accounts are not required for team collaboration on Eagle App. As long as everyone is able to access Eagle on their computer and the permission to view the DropBox folder is open to all your team members, then it’s good to go!
  • Note: After all, Eagle App is a tool made for personal usage, they don’t have permission levels or roles. Therefore, anyone who is connected to your shared Eagle library is allowed to modify, please make sure you set an editing guideline before you share with team members in case of unexpected file deletion. If you need permission settings, you can try the third-party sharing service, such as Synology NAS, which offers different permission roles and set up details for each user.

Syncing Eagle Library with DropBox FAQ

Can I use DropBox Files On-Demand to save space with Eagle?

Yes and No.

You CAN use DropBox Files On-Demand with Eagle, but it DOES NOT help you save space. As your files still need to exist locally to be read by Eagle, eventually Eagle is still a local-based app without synchronization.

To save space on your computer, currently only NAS and hard drive works.

Do take note, using Files On-Demand will take some time each time for files to be downloaded then read by Eagle, your user experience might be compromise.

Does Eagle have to download full versions when using DropBox Files On-Demand ?

Yes, as Eagle is a local-base app, it doesn’t offer syncing ability, they leverage DropBox’s cloud sync service to achieve sync/backup/team collab purposes. Therefore, to use Eagle with the files on-demand services, you have to download full version.

If I modify files on DropBox, will Eagle be able to detect, read or show the updated files?

No. Again, Eagle is a local-based App, it doesn’t offer synchronization ability. So the changes you made on DropBox will not be updated in Eagle App.

All the content that you want to display on Eagle must be operated through Eagle, please do not modify any data outside of Eagle, because the metadata.json file that helps the software to preview thumbnails and record tags, notes, etc will not be updated.

With that being said, Eagle aren’t able to read the modification you give the files.

Lastly, Don’t forget to backup constantly to avoid data loss!

Eagle App is made an on-premise service, therefore if you decide to connect Eagle App library with the cloud it’s your own responsibility to back up constantly to make sure data is secured in case of unexpected damage, sudden loss of internet connection or power failure occurs, especially when you’re about to make changes to the Eagle library!

Strongly recommend backing up:

  • Whole Eagle library periodically or
  • Every time before sharing the Eagle library with your team
