When was the last time you asked the question “why”? Why do we say it so much as children but forget to when we grow up? When was the last time you stopped to ask the question? To really understand something and not just assume it?

Many times, in our day to day life, we forget to be learners. We opt for the easy way out, taking learning opportunities for granted. We forget to be curious as we were once.

At Toyota, one of the companies known best for its good practices and high quality of processes and products in the world, they use a technique that was originally developed by Sakichi Toyoda.

This technique is known as “the 5 whys” and is a critical component in their problem-solving methodology. But the importance of “why”, doesn’t end here. The “why” also has the power to convey the essence and purpose of individuals or companies. Have you ever wondered why you are doing a certain thing and not another? Do you know the real answer to that question?

To delve into this subject, I recommend watching Simon Sinek’s TED talk: Start with WHY.

I encourage us all to be learners for a while, to get back to doing everyday things as if for the first time, to be wrong and make mistakes, because that is the only way to continue understanding, growing and improving.
