Hey folks!

This is an update on my adventures learning and improving data science and data engineer skills while in quarantine. You can read the previous parts at these friend links:

Week 5 Livestream Recording: Twitch or YouTube

Week 6

Week 7

Somewhat more back to normal this week. I emailed in the technical interview on Monday and spent the rest of the week catching up on networking and job applications. Not a great week, to be honest: going on a job search in this environment to no success with no feedback on ways to improve became demoralizing this week. Eventually, I did get some good advice on tweaking my resume and such, so I’m hopeful that my new resume will improve my prospects.

Another change? Re-looking at my application strategy to better emphasize and pursue connections and job opportunities with higher potential for success. So far, I’ve been reaching out primarily to recruiters, but this has largely led to dead ends

Just like last week, I did another coding livestream! I was still using the Pokemon dataset here and continued doing analysis and thinking about what to make with the data.

This week, I began adding a new feature to the dataset: factoring in damage calculations to try to determine whether a Pokemon would be good or bad against others.

I’m thinking of streaming again on Wednesday, May 20th at 7:15pm PST! This week, I want to put together the Raspberry Pi Spark cluster! Yeah, I know, I haven’t tried to get it working yet.

Cool Data Science Stuff

I came across this article last week. Unfortunately, I don’t know where it came from, but I think it is good! It points out the importance of people for AI systems and how AI is not truly a “set it and forget it” tool:

This got popular on Reddit, and I think it’s pretty funny! The creator used a Markov Chain to write an AC/DC song. Really made me realize what AC/DC songs are focused on!

I would be interested in writing up a more technical article on Markov Chains too, and that would probably be faster to write than the one I’m still working on…

Outside of Data Science

I had been saving discards from each feeding of sourdough to try to make something simple (like a loaf of bread) and taste differences between the ingredients. Unfortunately, a bunch of the discards went bad; black liquid or growths appeared. On the plus side, this meant I could free up a lot of space in the fridge!

I finished watching Community…what a great show! If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend watching it if you’ve got Netflix.

I think that’s enough from me for now. Remember: take the stairs when you can, Git commit/push and wash your hands frequently, and stay positive! Those were reminders for me too.
