Would you purposely lose your child?

A couple of years ago, my wife and I were wandering around a very large and busy north London store when we came across a very young boy, alone, obviously lost and very distressed.

My wife calmed the little fellow, who admitted he was looking for his mother. We took him to the customer service desk and reported him as a lost child. Within seconds, a lady came up and claimed the child as hers, which he was.

She explained to us that she had purposely let him think he was lost to teach him a lesson, as he was in the habit of wandering off.

She assured us that she knew where he was, but kept herself hidden to frighten him.

Now I am aware that keeping track of a toddler can sometimes be difficult. But surely this woman could have come up with a better way of discouraging her young son from wandering off.

Despite her claim that she was watching him, anything could of have happened to that child. The store was very crowded, and it would be easy for her to lose sight of him.

Not the best lesson in parental guidance, I am thinking.
