Today’s reading: “The Ministry of Healing” pp. 409–410.

A knowledge of God is the foundation of all true education and of all true service.

Like our Saviour, we are in this world to do service for God. We are here to become like God in character, and by a life of service to reveal Him to the world…

So starts this section “Essential Knowledge”. It sends us straight back to first page of the book…

Our Lord Jesus Christ came to this world as the unwearied servant of man’s necessity. He “took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses,” that He might minister to every need of humanity. Matthew 8:17. The burden of disease and wretchedness and sin He came to remove. It was His mission to bring to men complete restoration; He came to give them health and peace and perfection of character. p.17

Note that we are to be “like our Saviour” in a life of service, bringing complete restoration, bringing health in place of disease, peace of mind in place of wretchedness and perfection of character in place of sin. Serving people in these three areas was Christ’s mission and sounds like ours too.

However if we are to serve God aright, we need to lay the right foundation,

A knowledge of God is the foundation … of all true service.

This knowledge of God is the only way to,

  • Be co-workers with God
  • Become like Him in character
  • Reveal His character
  • Get a true education
  • Be really safeguarded against temptation
  • Work for uplifting our fellow humans
  • Be prepared for this life and the life to come.

In short,

Transformation of character, purity of life, efficiency in service, adherence to correct principles, all depend upon a right knowledge of God.

The Bible verses quoted reveal that a knowledge of God,

  • Is equivalent to fearing God and leads to wisdom and understanding
  • Gives us everything required for life and godliness
  • Is eternal life
  • Is the only thing we can safely boast or glory in
  • Is essentially a revelation of His faithful love, justice and righteousness, the things He delights in

We must know Him as He reveals Himself.

This “study” will,

  • Give peace and good
  • Have us treasure Him

We will delight in God because we see that He,

  • Hears our prayers
  • Answers to our prayers
  • Fulfils our plans and decisions
  • Lights our way
  • Lifts the humble and humiliated.
