2M2M — Day 60: Nothing #2
This is a post in a series concerning a challenge called 2 Months 2 Master: learn a difficult skill between 1 March — 30 April 2018, spending a maximum of 15 minutes a day on practice. Report every day on your learning process. We were inspired by Max Deutsch and his M2M. I teach first year students at LUCA School of Arts in Ghent, Belgium. All students have their own challenge. Mine is: do a one arm pull-up.
Today I took a second day of resting, to be ultimately prepared for the final day of 2M2M tomorrow. I am very curious how that will work out. I had no choice really, because my body still felt sore and tired today, so I had to listen.
I am thinking very hard about a next challenge, and today I had the chance to talk about it with some bright people. I get the impression that the focus on the result is still very much part of this challenge. In my view, focus on a desired result, is a focus on something that you think you need to achieve and therefor it is something that you think you lack at the moment.
This thinking in terms of shortcoming is how we are used to thinking in our educational system: you are lacking a certain knowledge or skill, and you are here to acquire that — to become a more complete human being. Challenges, competition, striving, endurance, sweat & tears… it is all part of that way of thinking. I am curious if we can give words to a challenge in a very different way. A way in which we acknowledge that everyone is perfect in her own way, but that there are of course a million things we want to know more about and that we use the challenge to focus on one — or several — without knowing where we will get.
I would really like it to be more about research: what are my capabilities? How does this feel for me? How far could I get here? Where do I feel the change in me if I…?
My thought now: on 1 May 2018 I start with a new challenge. I call it M2E— Month to Explore. I will take a month to explore what is in it for me. In what? I have not decided yet, but will tell you tomorrow.
Who will join me in the M2E-movement and explore one field of interest in one month? Join in and surprise yourself! Learning together is so much more fun!
