A fine alpine tradition: Jagdhornbläser
The Jagdhornbläser are those people who blow the hunting bugle or Jagdhorn. In bygone years, the hunting horn (or bugle) served as a vital means of communication amongst hunters.
The bugle is also a much used symbol used in alpine artisan jewellery that is worn by rural populations in Austria, Germany and Switzerland for special occassions.
Examples of various horn signals that convey vital information during a hunt include:
Halali — this signal was blown to announce the end of the hunt. What is usually meant is the loud call of the hunting horn, which signals the end of the hunt.
Departure signal — when the hunting party set off to pursue game, this signal indicated the beginningof the chase. Example of a departure signal can be heard by following this link.
Return signal — after the hunt this signal called the hunters back to regroup.
Announcing the kill — when a game animal was found, the corresponding signal was blown to inform others of the successful hunt.
Modern times and the art of horn blowing: despite the advent of modern telecommunication, such as radios and cell phones, the hunting horn remains a cherished and stylish element steeped in tradition. Many hunters appreciate the connection to the past and continue to use horn bugles during the hunt.
Hunting horn groups ( = Jagdhornbläser) exist at the local and regional level. These groups actively promote horn blowing and engage in public outreach. These Jagdhornbläser perform at events such as hunting fairs, marriages and funerals showcasing the beauty and unique sound of the hunting horn.
The art of the horn blowing is not only an ancient tradition but also one that is very much alive. In the alpine regions such as Austria, Germany and Switzerland different Groups gather periodically to compete in regional and national competitions.
