Three new Xbox Series X|S models were shown at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, but there was no mention of an Xbox handheld console, which has been repeatedly mentioned by some insiders.

After the show, IGN editor Ryan McCaffrey took the opportunity to ask Phil Spencer if Microsoft was working on such a console. Spencer didn’t confirm anything, but he didn’t deny it either, referring only to Xbox’s “awesome future in hardware”.

“The future for us in hardware is pretty awesome. The work that the team is doing around different form factors, different ways to play, I’m incredibly excited about.”

“Today was about the games… but we will have a time to come out and talk more about platform, and we can’t wait to bring it to you.”

When Phil Spencer was asked what a hypothetical Xbox handheld console could be — a full gaming system with the ability to run games locally (like Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch) or a cloud-based handheld device, the Microsoft gaming chief noted the importance of local, native game play.

He also said that he likes to use Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion GO and ASUS ROG Ally.

Rumours of a possible Xbox handheld console have been circulating for the past few months, with many expecting some sort of announcement at yesterday’s presentation.

The rumours were also fuelled by leaked Microsoft documents from last year that mentioned plans for an Xbox handheld console. However, Spencer later claimed that these documents were outdated.

Microsoft Announced 3 New Xbox Series X|S Models

Xbox Series S — 1TB in Robot White

Last year, a black version of the Xbox Series S was released with 1TB of internal storage. Now everyone can buy the white model with a terabyte SSD. The price is the same — $349.99, which is $50 more expensive than the standard with 512GB SSD.

Xbox Series X — 1TB Digital Edition

The long rumoured white ‘digital’ model of the powerful Xbox Series X console. It lacks a disc drive and is more affordable — $449 instead of $499.

Xbox Series X — 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition

The most advanced console in Microsoft’s current range — with all the power of a hard drive, disc drive and SSD for 2TB. A nice bonus will be the unique ‘galactic’ design of the model. The price will be $599.99.

Pre-orders will open soon. Stay tuned!
