The Retelling of Book 1
In Book 1 of Homer’s “The Odyssey,” we are introduced to the hero Odysseus, who has been away from home for many years due to the Trojan War.
The story begins on the island of Ithaca, where Odysseus’ son Telemachus is struggling with the absence of his father and the unruly suitors who have taken over his household, believing Odysseus to be dead.
Telemachus decides to embark on a journey to find out more about his father’s fate.
Meanwhile, we learn that Odysseus is trapped on the island of Calypso, longing to return home.
This sets the stage for the epic adventures and challenges that Odysseus and Telemachus will face in their separate quests.
