In Calypso’s arms, Odysseus lay, Seven long years, he’d lost his way. Desiring home, where he wished to stay, He longed for Ithaca, night and day.

Zeus sent Hermes, a message to bear, To Calypso’s isle, through the skies he’d fare. “Release Odysseus,” the divine declare, A hero’s journey, beyond compare.

Calypso, with sorrow, agreed at last, To free the hero from her island’s grasp. A raft was built, the die was cast, Odysseus’ journey, home at last.

But Poseidon’s rage, the sea did churn, A storm arose, as Odysseus did yearn. Shipwrecked and tested, he’d soon discern, The path to Ithaca, he must discern.

In Book 5 of Homer’s “The Odyssey” (Leonidas Esquire Translation), the narrative shifts back to Odysseus. He is still trapped on the island of Calypso, where he has been held captive for seven years. Calypso, a nymph, desires Odysseus as her lover and offers him immortality, but Odysseus longs to return home to his wife, Penelope, and his homeland, Ithaca.

Hermes, the messenger god, is sent by Zeus to deliver a message to Calypso, urging her to release Odysseus. Calypso reluctantly agrees, and she helps Odysseus build a raft to leave the island.

Odysseus sets sail, but Poseidon, the god of the sea, creates a fierce storm to hinder his progress. After facing many trials and tribulations at sea, including a shipwreck, Odysseus manages to survive and reach the island of Scheria, where Book 5 comes to a close.

Book 5 emphasizes Odysseus’ enduring desire to return home and his struggle against the obstacles that keep him from reuniting with his family.
