Tiny Homeworld Build 01 — Kadeshi Fleet

So, I’ve been working on a series of tiny ships based on the Battletech setting, wich made for really satisfying small builds that take few parts and are easy to build if not to create. Other series retained some of my original scales, but recently a long-time follower and member of other online communities I partake in, ThatBroDad, came to me with an interesting challenge — make tiny Homeworld models.

As before, I started with the Kadeshi.

This concept has some really nice things to it. One of them is that by being smaller it uses way less parts making the builds easier for people to make, but also for me to create (last week I remade almost all of my Homeworld models in this scale). It also has an exponential scale, as each stud of size represents an incresing amount of lenght — essentially the Kadeshi Needle Ship should be two to three times larger than I made it, for example; it’s a deformed scale ssentially, but also makes interaction between models easier you’re playing a game or just want to make a small diorama in your shelf. The small size also makes for models that are easy to store and carry, which is a practical consideration I seldom thought of in the past.

I really fell in love with this and I think I may actually finish this series in due time. Homeworld 3 is coming out, so I’ll have a lot of catching up to do in the next few months. I also intend to make ship listings for some wargames, but that may take some time as I need to figure things out.

For the fleet itself, we’ll have two types of fighters. The smallest type, the Swarmer, should be made using the basic fighter instructions I made before. For the Advanced Swarmer I made a new model.

For this list I’m also adding a creation of the ThatBroDad himself. He created a Kadeshi corvette, this class being a mid-term between fighters and smaller capital ships. I found the design really nice for this scale, so decided to add it. All the credit goes to him, I’m just sharing his creation.

Then we come to the two types of small frigate-class vessels the Kadeshi use. This is a civilization with very little in the way of resources and even if they wanted to deep mine the nebula they hide themselves in they would potentially diminish the protection it offers them against the wider galaxy. You can read more about their story in my prior post about them as it is quite fascinating.

Nevertheless, they are limited to build fighters and small ships. The Fuel Pod is an important one as it ressuplies the short-range fighters the Kadeshi use, being essential for drawn-out skirmishes. The model itself only uses seven parts which should be easy to find even if not in these colors.

But they also need a serious punch to fight against enemy capital ships. The Kadeshi have some surprisingly advanced light frigates equipped with multi-beam ion projectors. These weapons give the Multi-Beam Frigates awesome broadside firepower for something of its size.

These ships were also tricky to create at this scale but eventually a solution was found. Like the corvettes, it just uses three parts. The idea was actually based on a dropship design for my Battletech series.

The last ship in the Kadeshi lineup is also the larger one. These are the only heavy capital ships they have, being limited in number, also where they live their meager lives, while patroling the nebula in search of interlopers — the Needle Ships.

Now, in order to try to retain some fidelity to the original this model has some nunce to it as I make the stand an integral part of the build iself. So, this time I’d say it takes ten parts accounting for the base. The platform itself i think you can make however you want, but you would need the stand to keep it together. That said, two bars with a claw hand could also work but they would be less stable.

This is the first fleet for this series, then. Given the size and simplicity of these models, I think I’ll be able to put entire fleets in single posts, or at least entire sections of each fleet as work to a complete set. I’ll be trying to include fleets from all games, including the small factions in Mobile, so stay tuned.

And let me know what you think — this is a new challenge and I’ve been finding it much more satisfying than the prior attempts. You can think otherwise and your opinions are cherished by yours truly.
