Bill Gates once said: “The secret of my success is that I do not miss any opportunities”.

In the following, I present a list of opportunities for undergraduates from underrepresented minorities in tech in North America.

This post is a second part of a first article, where I present opportunities for all undergraduates in North America. So, make sure to check it too. The third part is dedicated to undergraduate females in North America.

Scholarship opportunities:

  • Quip Diversity Scholarship: Quip diversity scholarship is a $5,000 and or a $1,000 scholarship is open to Women, Black, LatinX, Native American, first-generation college students, LGBTQ+, and/or student with disabilities in the US or Canada.
  • The VMware Rise Scholarship is a $5,000 USD scholarship to bachelor level students in US in Computer Science, or a related degree. Students must be with one or more underrepresented minority.
  • Palantir’s Future Scholarship : Recipients will get $7,000 and an invitation to visit Palantir’s Washington, D.C. office for a full-day, all-expenses paid developmental workshop. Recipients should be full-time undergraduate students (freshman, sophomore, or junior) enrolled in an accredited U.S., Canadian or Mexican college/university who are majoring in or plan to major in STEM fields and are from an underrepresented racial/ethnic group in STEM.
  • Bank of Canada General scholarship awards: These 4000 CAD$ scholarships are awarded for students that are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Students can be undergraduates or graduates students in several fields including Information Technology and Cyber Security. These scholarships are also open for students with disabilities, Indigenous students, and students who identify as members of a visible minority group.

Leadership opportunities:

  • MLT programs: MLT’s programs aim to accelerate the careers of high-achieving African-American, Latino and Native-American students with leadership training.
  • Dorm Room Fund’s Blueprint Investor: This 6-week program brings talented Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students with an entrepreneurial potential, and provides them with resources to become future venture investors.

Internship opportunities:

  • Code2040 Fellows Program: This program is for Black and Latinx undergraduate and graduate-level computer science students. It provides a 9-week internship, and several learning experiences.

Educational opportunities:

  • DE Shaw Latitude fellowship: This program brings sophomore or junior US students who identify as Native American or Alaska Native, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, or Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander for 3 days full of seminars and sessions. The fellowship includes a stipend, travel, accommodation, and excursions. Students should be interested in both: finance and technology.
  • DE Shaw Momentum fellowship: Open to US sophomore or junior year students part of the LGBTQ+ community.

There are other initiatives that try to increase the presence of individuals from underrepresented groups in STEM in certain fields. Although these are not specifically aimed for students, engaging in one of them out might be helpful. For instance, for the Artificial Intelligence field, I am aware of the Black in AI and LatinX in AI initiatives.

Final Notes:

  • This article is not final, I will make sure to update it with new great opportunities. So, take a look again every once in a while
  • You can look here for other interesting opportunities for undergraduates. Opportunities for female undergraduates can be found here.
  • I gathered opportunities to attend GHC (Grace Hopper Celebration) here.
