KiD CuDi & Travi$ Scott Come Together to Form ‘THE SCOTTS’
Travis Scott and Kid Cudi have joined together once again and fans could not be more excited. With their newest single, “THE SCOTTS” debuting at #1 on Billboard Hot 100, the duo is back in full force for what fans hope will lead to a project.
The hype began right after Cudi returned to the scene with his single “Leader Of The Delinquents” on April 14. As many artists are doing due to social distancing orders, he previewed the track over Instagram Live. Shortly after Cudi’s release, Fortnite announced a performance-like experience with Travis Scott called “ASTRONOMICAL” that would premiere on April 23. A package of skins, gear, and emotes were released for gamers and Scott was able to further expand his fanbase. News had surfaced that Scott would feature a new track during the performance featuring Cudi. If that was not enough, Scott went live with Cudi after the event to preview “THE SCOTTS” as well as another unreleased track. “THE SCOTTS” dropped at midnight on April 24.
The duo’s name ‘THE SCOTTS’ refers to both the rapper’s names together. While Travis Scott’s stage name is derived from his favorite uncle’s name, Kid Cudi’s real name is Scott Mescudi. Mescudi’s first name also plays a part into why Travis uses the name Scott, hence their collective name, ‘THE SCOTTS’.
True Cudi fans know that he has had his ups and downs throughout his career. From overcoming his own personal troubles and channeling them into his music, Cudi fans over the years have named him for being the savior of a generation, including Travis Scott. Though he only had a few hits that made it mainstream, his music has resonated with his core base over the entirety of his career. Some relate personally to his struggles and others look to him to remind them that things can always get better for them too, no matter what their struggle is. Scott has mentioned time and time again how he has always been a fan of Cudi. In an interview with Hot 97, Scott tells how Cudi “saved his life,” as many die-hard Cudi fans can relate. Scott referred to him as one of his main inspirations in music. He explains, “I feel like he really dialed in on the youth and really dialed in on…how to inspire you. I feel like he always made the soundtrack to like my life or anybody’s life who was like going through the same thing. If you a big Cudi fan, you know exactly what I’m saying.” In Scott’s eye as well as many Cudi fans, Cudi should be a top tier artist but does not get the recognition that he deserves. Scott says that Cudi “fathered a lot of the music,” by his styles and influence. Scott even has a playlist on his Spotify titled “Songs That Made Me Dream” with a total of 14 tracks and 3 of them include Cudi.
Fans would often argue that Kid Cudi has not received nearly as much recognition as he deserves for the cultural impact he has had on our generation and even Scott would agree. With Scott now being a top tier artist, he has been able to reawaken Cudi’s inspiration and bring him to the top along with him as he deserves. Scott has done a similar tactic in the past multiple times in forming his own collective groups. He collaborated with Quavo of the Migos to create ‘Huncho Jack’ in 2018. A year later, he did a collaborative album with Young Thug, Quavo, Offset, Pop Smoke, Sheck Wes and Don Toliver and named themselves ‘JACKBOYS’. Kid Cudi has also been a part of a few collectives including WZRD in 2012 and KIDS SEE GHOSTS with Kanye West in 2018.
Scott and Cudi have collaborated on tracks in the past including “Baptized In Fire”, “through the late night”, and “STOP TRYING TO BE GOD”, but never before have they created a complete project as a duo. ‘THE SCOTTS’ has proven that they are now ready to take over by knocking one of the biggest artists out of the top spot on the charts, The Weeknd, who had the #1 track on Billboard’s Top 100 for 8 weeks in a row.
Seeing two artists that hold such great meaning in many fan’s lives come together once again is incredibly moving, especially while under such difficult circumstances.
