Bible Study vs Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll
5 Tips to Get that Bible Study Done
The Fight — It’s Real
That series with your favorite actor, the blockbuster that’s finally streaming, or the anime premiere you’ve been waiting on for the last two years — all can deliver a quick knockout punch to the best laid plans of spending time with God.
It’s a legitimate battle — a constant war a lot of us are waging against the siren call of all the entertainment that’s only a remote control away.
What to Do?
If we’re going to get closer to God, know Him, find out what He’s promised us, and what He expects from us — we gotta get in That Word.
It’s what sustains us in this upside down, wild-west kind of world we live in these days.
That soul-saving Good News — that once we submit to Jesus as our Lord — we are no longer held liable for a sin debt that we can never no-kind-of-way pay — is like marrow in the bones.
It’s the self-sustaining energy drink that keeps flowing as we study the Bible.
Yeah, Bay. We gotta swan dive into those pages.
Reading, studying, and obeying God’s word must be a lifetime top priority. Kick procrastination and boredom to the curb like this:
5 Ways to Prioritize Bible Study
#1. Stop thinking it’s a chore. This is your time to spend with God. Enjoy it!
Light a candle.
Sip hot cocoa.
Grab colored pens and draw in the margins while you read.
Change up the Bible version.
Go outside and study on the porch or in the backyard.
#2. Back up from screen/streaming distractions. That means physically moving yourself away from the computer or tv. If your phone is the culprit set it down. Walk away.
If you use your phone or other devices to study, then consider switching to a physical Bible. That way you won’t be tempted to tap that app or swipe or scroll.
#3. Plan and plot your study time. Already know what you are going study and for how long.
Then focus and get it done.
#4. K-O boredom by spicing up study time with Bible maps. More tips for that are here.
#5. Stay engaged by taking notes in your Bible. Write in the white spaces, or tape a sheet of paper on the edge of the page and add notes from a dictionary or commentary.
Did something miraculous happen?
Was a prophecy fulfilled?
Is there a cross reference? (Here’s my article about how to read a Bible verse.)
Make a note of it right there in your Bible. You’ll see it the next time you flip to that page and it may entice you to devote further study on that topic.
The act of writing will engage your mind as well as your hands and help to beat back distracting thoughts. Plus, writing and making notes will help you to retain the verses you studied.
And if you remember and understand what you’ve read, you can then apply it to real life.
Now go watch your shows. Start over tomorrow.
