Rick Rubin is an American record executive and producer. He co-founded Def Jam Records (alongside Russell Simmons). Because of Rick, artists like Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and Johnny Cash were creatively supported.

Most music industry executives focus on what will work in the marketplace. Rick explores creativity and supports the artist. This leadership takes vision, but anybody who wants can create this way.

I aim to be the Rick Rubin for entrepreneurs. After years of inner journey experience, I plugged into creative intelligence. Although I have zero artistic talent, I feel connected to what’s coming next. His book explains.

“You exist as a creative being in a creative universe. A singular work of art.” This statement of his reminds me of the past few years of my life. He wants artistic people to discover their potential. I want this for entrepreneurs.

My lead generation, prospecting, and sales history makes sense in this context. I’ve sold business insurance door-to-door, made tens of thousands of cold calls to corporate buyers, and worked in hundreds of industries.

Without exception, I’ve had little training, less experience, and never had a brand behind me. At times, it felt soul-crushing that this was my life, but success always came, and with it, freedom, money, and satisfaction.

The ether of intelligent energy surrounding all human beings is open to all. Our job is to access its wisdom, power, and ideas. This creative field contains information for entrepreneurs who are artists in disguise.

My paintbrush is a lifetime in the trenches of the entrepreneurial grind. The journey passed through the history of the marketing industry. Using most business models, I sold products, services, software, and knowledge.

When we wake up to our power, the ultimate act of democratic equality occurs in our creations. Society's control ends. Your potential as an entrepreneur is truly awesome. Working in tight groups, it’s unlimited.

Artists filter creative energy through the medium of artistry honed over years of experience. Before fully expressing creative vision, an artist must learn to draw, paint, or sing. The originals create Black Swan events.

If you aren’t familiar with the term, it was coined by Nassim Nicholas Taleb to describe a “consequential occurrence that is almost impossible to predict, yet after the fact seems to have been inevitable.” This is new art.

Today, it’s possible not only to know what’s coming but also to jump out ahead. Black Swan is a myth. Most people in business, except for the rare entrepreneurial visionary, can’t see the obvious Black Swans coming.

For entrepreneurs, the goal is to know. The basic skills of creating from vision, exploring product/market fit, and designing the business must be learned, practiced, and refined. Then, it’s critical to find the Black Swan.

The world has evolved beyond traditional and tired ways of bringing new business ideas into markets hungry for innovation. It’s not good enough to merely succeed. We want to surf waves of creative energy into new oceans.

LIMITING BELIEFS:

Here are the barriers of thought that I notice in the entrepreneurial community. None of this is true. If this list resonates, know it doesn’t matter. You have everything that you need today. We are all creators.

I’m not experienced.

I’m not original.

I’m not smart enough.

I don’t have enough money.

I’m not successful.

My entire life has been a journey of tension between thoughts like these and the creative act of business development that led to major success. These thoughts motivated me to strike out in new ways in new territory.

Here’s a surprise: The power of art comes from truth. It does not release from working on these limiting beliefs. The artist experiences them fully. What follows is access to creative intelligence. Then, the magic trick.

The original creation comes from an alchemical transmutation of thought into form. The artist feels deeply. This thought and feeling combination is translated into art through a medium that has been practiced.

For entrepreneurs, it’s the same process. The medium is business experience. Here’s the good news. You need none. It’s possible to create an original company with no experience. It may be better to know nothing.

Rather than overcoming your limiting beliefs with mindset training, embrace them. You don’t need to force results. I’ll share a creative business development method that has worked for me for a lifetime.

Artists know this. Look at all the great flowerings of artistic creativity, from the Renaissance to the birth of and mainstreaming of hip-hop music. It can’t happen in a vacuum. The full potential comes from the collective.

The business world doesn’t realize what’s coming. I’ve met thousands on social media, hosted hundreds of events, and run private rooms. We’ve played in the sandbox of creation like the great artistic movements.

It’s time for these experiments to cross the chasm into the mainstream. I don’t know when the leaps will occur, but I know Black Swans can’t be stopped. Change that comes from released creative energy will arrive.
