It’s no secret that Medium, like other social media platforms, habitually changes its algorithm to best cope with competitors, advancements in technology, and to outsmart users who try to go around rules to “overperform.”

If you are on Medium to earn some money or make it your full-time job, rather than just for the pleasure of writing, you may find this interesting.

Quite a few people have been temporarily blocked or indefinitely banned from the platform for not complying with some of the rules. Spamming, fake interactions, and excessive use of AI remain the main reasons.

Tagging too many people is definitely a red flag for the algorithm. Nobody knows how many tags are too many. My suggestion would be to justify the tags properly. Don’t blindly tag half of your followers to boost your read chances. This is taken very seriously by the Medium team.

The new version of the algorithm can easily recognize fake or coordinated interaction patterns. Clap and runners will have a harder time now.

Even though I still see many AI users, even in comments, it’s just a matter of time. Since May 1st, Medium has announced a stricter policy against those who publish articles using AI.

What are the changes for June and July?

June has been described by many as a real roller coaster ride, not only because of the numerous bugs that were part of the transition to the new algorithm but mainly because of the chaos those changes brought about. Most likely, July will be the same.

The main changes are:

New Claps Rule:
Wait for at least 20 seconds before clapping; otherwise, they will not count, and it will impact the writer’s earnings. The best practice is always to clap as the last thing, which makes sense. First, you read, then show that you enjoyed by clapping. It’s logical after all 😅.

One more thing about claps: always giving 50 claps may look suspicious and BOT-like. This is something to think about…

New Comment Rule:
Like the claps, wait at least 20 seconds before leaving a comment, or it will not be counted. Additionally, you may risk being associated with SPAM BOTs by the algorithm. If you leave a comment within the first 20 seconds, you must wait another 30 seconds before leaving the second one.

It’s worth reminding you of the comment limit of 100 per day.

Don’t skim:
For all the “skimmers” out there, the new algorithm is watching closely. It knows how quickly you scroll up and down, and if that is not even close to a realistic reading speed, it may not count as a read. This can impact the reads/views ratio and consequently, earnings

Quality over Quantity:
Medium is still focused on prioritizing quality over quantity. No matter how many followers you have, if your article offers original research, in-depth analysis, and resonates more with the public, it will appear more often in people’s feeds. Personal experiences and life lessons continue to be the most popular stories

New Writers Spotlight:
This feature gives newcomers more space than before, ensuring that high-quality content from emerging writers receives greater exposure.

Earnings Calculation:
Many people complained about lower earnings during the last month. However, the parameters have not changed. This formula will simply include the factors mentioned above (claps, comments, skimming, etc.).

I would also like to mention a few brilliant authors who also wrote about this topic, who inspired me to do the same. HERZ magaZine and Fleda.B. Find their articles below.
