Introduction

Writing in your journal might be something you simply love doing. But did you know that, it is also a creative habit that can help you keep track of your own progress while learning any language, English included?

Remember that Journaling for many people is an everyday habit, just another chance to write down your feelings without judgment. In this article, a few essential reasons are given as to why journaling might be one of the best ways to improve your English.

Writing in your Journal can help express thoughts, interests, and even feelings in English!

Yes, so you rather enjoy using your journal. However, were you aware that since while writing in a Journal there are no writing rules, you actually get a chance to express your opinions and thoughts in the target language?

Writing about the topics that interest you is often a freeing exercise, and is the essence of Journaling. This is one of the reasons why it is a great tool for English language learning!

Writing in a journal allows you to describe things like your goals, and your dreams in English in detail. You will also find yourself journaling about other essential key topics that usually arise in conversation.

Journaling centers around the output produced, which is the same as speaking English, compared to just listening or reading English. For e.g. writing about a dream perhaps in broken English in a journal is not a futile exercise, and will help you improve your English learning vastly.

Keeping track of the time you spend learning

Journaling can help you keep track of the time you actually invest in learning a new language. This is one of the most obvious reasons for using the journaling method to learn English.

In general, Journaling is a great habit, that will help you to reflect on other errors/mistakes in your basic language learning experience such as the improvements in your English you have made over time. This is usually a huge motivation to keep going!

Correcting language patterns such as gaps in English vocabulary

As mentioned before, writing in a journal is not only enjoyable, it basically offers you a chance to learn any language without judgment. The very act is so freeing and allows you to ‘be yourself’! You are allowed to make vocabulary and grammar mistakes, so long as you review the journal later!

A journal may allow you to write in that natural ‘stream-of-consciousness’ manner, but remember, by doing so you make an extra effort to describe specific ideas clearly in English which is new to you.

Writing in a Journal may also give you a chance to stop and take note of some language errors you might be making such as repeating yourself. The act of Journaling, though spontaneous, gives you the opportunity to review/correct whatever you have written and fill in the blanks later.

You can use the Journaling method to examine your English language learning habits!

You may wildly enjoy your Journaling activity, but did you know that it also gives you the chance to — review your time spent learning English?

Believe it or not, Journaling actually gives you the opportunity to block out a specific amount of time to ‘Read in English’, ‘ To Speak in English’, and even perhaps to ‘Review your Grammar Rules’!

You can even use your Journal to understand exactly when you are most productive while learning English and identify your unique language learning style.

Why showing your Journal to your English Tutor is a great Idea!

It might actually be a great idea to share your journal entries with your English language tutor during the few free minutes before the start of any learning session. This might usually be the time dedicated to asking doubts, and checking whether essential assignments were completed, but a quick skim-through of your journal entry with your tutor couldn’t hurt.

Writing in a journal is a natural exercise that allows you to be free. However, as you and your tutor review your journal entries, you can actually discover confusing English language mistakes like ‘What is the correct tense to use in this sentence?’ or is there ‘ a better way to say X?’ Hence, the showing your Journal entries to your English tutor might actually motivate you to stay on track regarding language learning.

Conclusion

From the above, we can see how Journaling can be a wonderful way to learn any language, including English. Learning a language does not have to be like doing chores, and remember that the act of Journal Writing is an enjoyable way to become confident in English or any other language.
