Week 3 - To know about various scholarship programs

Week 3 of our Mentorship Program started with a call on Wednesday when we discussed Scholarship Programs specifically. We also discussed our doubts regarding RGSOC and finished writing my SOP for an internship, and got it reviewed as well by my mentor Mansi Breja.

Scholarships

There are a number of scholarship opportunities to expand your knowledge and develop your professionalism for global competence.

Types of scholarships :

  1. Academic Scholarships: Scholarships that are offered on a merit basis by our universities/colleges.

2. Professional Scholarships: These are usually scholarships provided for professional courses/training. Ex- Udacity.

3. Conference Scholarships: These are to encourage attendance at technical conferences, these are fully funded meaning they cover all your expenses from travel to stay. Ex- GHC

I am mentioning some of the scholarship programs that are worth applying for:

  1. Venkat Panchapakesan Memorial Scholarship: Selected students will receive a financial award of 750 USD towards tuition and education-related expenses, and will be invited to visit the YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California, USA. Selected students will also have an opportunity to submit a proposal, and potentially receive funding of up to 225 USD to spend on growing computer science in the local community.
  2. Women Techmaker Scholarship: Formerly the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship Program — Google is furthering Dr. Anita Borg’s vision of creating gender equality in the tech industry by encouraging women to excel as active participants and leaders in the field.
  3. Grace Hopper Scholarships: The Scholarship will allow women in Technology to attend the Grace Hopper Celebrations. The Program is the Highest Gathering of Women in Technology, Engineering, and Science to deliberate their future and Resources. These Year Scholarships are awarded by 4 Companies. They Include Facebook, Google AnitaB.org, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs.

I got to learn about how to write applications for such programs, and what are the significant points to focus on. Our mentor told us that many people face this problem that, they fill the applications excitedly but fail to get accepted for the program; this is where the role of writing a good application comes into the picture. She told us to get the applications reviewed by some seniors or anyone you know who has ever applied for them earlier.

So these were all of my takeaways from Week 3. Cheers !!
